Ghetto tours stopped

Ghetto tours stopped, A company that promised sightseer tours to the Bronx that included a New York City "ghetto" has stopped the bus rides under protest from an outraged neighborhood.Real Bronx Tours, which took mostly European tourists from Manhattan to see life in the South Bronx "from a safe distance," issued a statement this week saying it would immediately cease all tours there.Three times a week, the $45 ride took visitors past food-pantry lines, a housing project and a park a guide described as a pickpocket hangout.Tourists were told they'd get a look at the Bronx that reflects one of the darkest chapters of the city's history, the 1970s and `80s, when the tour website said "this borough was notorious for drugs, gangs, crime and murders."The Bronx lost hundreds of buildings to fires intentionally set by landlords to collect insurance money, hence the phrase, "the Bronx is burning."But residents say the tours are a misrepresentation of the area where former Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor lived in as children."Those days are over, the Bronx is being rebuilt, it's rising again," said Bronx resident and Grammy-nominated musician Bobby Sanabria. On Monday, Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and City Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito sent an open letter to the company owner, Michael Myers, saying they were "sickened by the despicable way" the borough was being portrayed to outsiders."We strongly urge you to stop profiting off of a tour that misrepresents the Bronx as a haven for poverty and crime, while mocking everything from our landmarks to the less fortunate members of our community who are availing themselves of food assistance programs."The tour company did not respond to calls and emails requesting comment. It was not clear whether they would resume any of their tours. And by Thursday, the website of the company was no longer accessible.Other companies in the city still offer regular guided trips to the Bronx.Three weeks ago, NYC & Company, the city's tourism bureau, launched a promotion of the South Bronx as "one of our safest, most exciting boroughs," with highlights including Art Deco architecture and the Yankees.Real Bronx Tours has been booted from the bureau's membership list as a result of the language they've been using, NYC & Company spokeswoman Kimberly Spell said.Elena Martinez, an anthropologist and Bronx resident, offers visitors walks through the same neighborhood that was on Real Bronx Tours' itinerary. The human struggles on these still gritty streets have produced urban styles and sounds copied around the world, from hip hop music and outdoor murals to clothing."Many young Europeans come here as a pilgrimage," Martinez said. "This was the incubator for hip-hop, salsa, jazz, Afro-Cuban music, R&B."She points to theaters, lavish dance halls and clubs where salsa came alive, along with some of the biggest names in music. Sanabria, a famed drummer, says he comes from a borough "that has an incredible, majestic music culture."And although many of the buildings now house stores and offices, or were demolished or burned down, new ones mingle with restored historic ones "and people are helping to bring the neighborhood back," Martinez said."We've had enough of the gawkers who come to ghettoize us," says Al Quinones, caretaker of a community park that features a garden with fruit trees and a stone outdoor amphitheater. "Their timing was bad. The Bronx is not burning, not now! Now, it's resurgence."On the door to his shack on the grounds is a sign that reads: "Don't dump on the Bronx."Sanabria, Martinez and other Bronx residents are meeting Friday to kick-start a counter-campaign to what they call the Bronx's "negative image."

Photo of the Day - 23 May 2013

There has been a nasty incident in London overnight:If media reports of the utterances of the alleged killers after the fatal attack are correct, this incident is an act of terrorism; it is certainly being treated as one by British authorities as the Herald reports:British Prime Minister David Cameron says there are "strong indications" that a brutal attack in London is terror-related. Two men attacked another man near a London military barracks. One man died and the two others believed to have weapons were shot by police. Speaking at a press conference in Paris with French President Francois Hollande, Cameron called the attack "the most appalling crime" and said there are "strong indications" that it is a terrorist incident. Hollande says a British soldier was killed in the attack, but Cameron didn't immediately confirm that. Cameron said he would be cutting his trip short to return to London. There will doubtless be more to come on this story. We make no apologies for the graphic image above; terrorism in whatever form it takes cannot be ignored.

One More Time: Moore Had Plenty of Warning

I was bombarded by people, including some associated with large media companies, today telling me:Moore had little warningMoore had eight minutes warningMoore had 16 minutes warningAll of those are incorrect. Depending on part of town, Moore had 36 minutes or more of warning! I'm not sure why this is vexing the media as much as it is but the documentation is below:Here is the tornado warning issued at 2:40pm:Here is the map of locations and times:The first damage in west Moore was at 3:16pm. From 2:40 to 3:16 is 36 minutes. That is triple the national average (12 minutes) for tornado warnings. In east Moore, it was more than 40 minutes!Let's review the entire timeline:This blog, Sunday and Monday mornings, highlighted the risk for the Moore area. A tornado watch was issued for Moore more than two hours before the tornado struck. When the tornado warning was issued outdoor sirens sounded, local TV and radio stations ceased regular programming and started continuous coverage. NOAA weather radios alarmed. Smartphone apps activated. Two TV stations’ helicopters were showing the tornado – live – approaching Moore. In other words, just how much warning do you want?! At some point, this becomes an issue of personal responsibility. It is your obligation to be weather-wise.  Meteorologists cannot lead you by the hand into shelter. The National Weather Service did an outstanding job.  Capisce!

Obit: Taylor Mead, 1924-2013 (American writer, actor, performer)

* Underground film icon, Taylor Mead, has died aged 88. The elfin poet and Andy Warhol superstar had Neptune in Leo exactly conjunct his IC and ruling his Pisces Moon.

Taylor Mead (December 31, 1924 – May 8, 2013) was an American writer, actor, and performer. Mead appeared in several of Andy Warhol's underground films filmed at Warhol's Factory, including Tarzan and Jane Regained... Sort of (1963) and Taylor Mead's Ass (1964).

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Mead appeared in Ron Rice's beat classic The Flower Thief (1960), in which he "traipses with an elfin glee through a lost San Francisco of smoke-stuffed North Beach cafes..." Film critic P. Adams Sitney called The Flower Thief "the purest expression of the Beat sensibility in cinema." Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman called Mead "the first underground movie star."

In the mid 1970s, Gary Weis made some short films of Mead talking to his cat in the kitchen of his Ludlow Street apartment on the Lower East Side called Taylor Mead's Cat. One film of Mead extemporizing on the virtues of constant television watching aired during the second season of Saturday Night Live.

Mead lived in the Lower East Side of Manhattan on Ludlow Street and read his poetry regularly at The Bowery Poetry Club. His last book of poems (published by Bowery Poetry Books) is called A Simple Country Girl. He was the subject of a documentary entitled Excavating Taylor Mead, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2005. The film shows him engaging in his nightly habit of feeding stray cats in an East Village cemetery after bar-hopping, and features a cameo by Jim Jarmusch, in which Jarmusch explains that once, when Mead went to Europe, he enlisted Jarmusch's brother to feed the cemetery cats in Mead's absence.

Mead appeared in the final segment of Jarmusch's 2003 film Coffee and Cigarettes. He has been "a beloved icon of the downtown New York art scene since the 60s."

Mead died on May 8, 2013 in Colorado, having moved from his Ludlow Street apartment in Manhattan earlier this spring, "after many years of a dispute with his landlord."

Watch Jodi Arias trial streaming live May 21, 2013, murderer will testify during penalty phase (online videos)

On May 21, 2013, convicted murderer Jodi Arias will testify on her own behalf during the penalty phase of her first-degree murder trial. Arias was convicted on May 8, 2013, of killing her lover Travis Alexander in an extremely cruel manner. She slit his throat nearly beheading him, stabbed him 29 times (including stabs in the back, chest, heart and hands) and shot him in the head on June 4, 2008. She is now facing the death penalty in what could be the fight of her life. It is unclear exactly what Jodi Arias will say as she has repeatedly made statements eluding to wanting death rather than life. Will Jodi Arias speak to the jury and beg them to put her to death? If not, will she prove herself yet again to be a liar and plead with them to spare her by giving her life in prison? Will Jodi Arias finally own up to the gruesomeness of her actions and apologize to the family for slaughtering Travis Alexander or will she continue to state that their loved one was an abusive pedophile whom she killed in self defense?Jodi Arias' criminal defense attorneys have tried to get removed from the case several times and have filed numerous motions.Unless Jodi Arias gets a sentence she is pleased with, we can rest assured this trial is far from over but will continue to play out in the appellate court for many years to come. You may watch the Jodi Arias trial, penalty phase live streaming online on May 21, 2013, in the video player below.Watch Jodi Arias Trial live while in session Live video from your iPhone using Ustream (live stream from www.azfamily.com)Watch the trial on you mobile device• To watch live video of the Arias trial on your iPhone or iPad, just download the appropriate free app from iTunes. Kanye West - New Slaves (Live at Saturday Night Live)

Kanye West - "New Slaves" SNL Performance from Eric on Vimeo.Yeezy Season chegou!

Doctor Who: 1977

Episode 455: Horror of Fang Rock, part 2First broadcast: 6.15 pm, Saturday 10 September 1977<< back to 1976Leela threatens Lord Palmerdale,The Horror of Fang Rock, part 2(image swiped from Doctor Who gifs)As wise Jonny Morris puts it in the most recent Doctor Who Magazine,"this story is the third in what has to be the most impressive run of stories in the show's history."Part of the strength of The Robots of Death, The Talons of Weng-Chiang and Horror of Fang Rock is how well written the new companion is. Leela is a brilliant character: bold, brave and never stupid, she's grown up as a "savage" (the word the series uses) on an alien world where life is very hard. She's a sci-fi twist on Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, but for all the Doctor is Professor Higgins, teaching her about science and manners and getting her to put some clothes on, he never quite tames the savage within. Leela's best moments are when she doesn't behave like a lady.Yet there's something troubling about a companion so comfortable with killing, who'll reach for a weapon whenever there's a problem. Tom Baker objected, too, insisting that when Leela kills someone in her first story that the Doctor replies with cold fury:That wasn't necessary. Who licensed you to slaughter people? No more Janis thorns, you understand? Ever. After that, she tends to wound not kill people (aliens apparently don't count). Why is it a problem? It's not as if the Doctor hasn't previously had companions who are ready to fight and kill. All the male companions until Harry were called upon to fight and kill baddies, usually brawling with bare hands as if that's morally better. Sara wanted to kill the Doctor the first time she met him; Zoe was skilled in martial arts (as was Jo, though she rarely used it). The Doctor and his friends are frequently caught up in battles that leave their enemies dead.Leela, though, is unlike any other companion before or since because of her relish for killing. As I said, we rarely see her kill after her first story so it's all in her words. There's her response to Palmerdale that I've chosen as my image:Silence! You will do as the Doctor instructs, or I will cut out your heart. There's more in part four, as she taunts the Rutan:Enjoy your death as I enjoyed killing you!Later, the Doctor's chides her again - but she won't be chided.DOCTOR:Been celebrating, have you?LEELA:It is fitting to celebrate the death of an enemy. Most brutally of all there's the moment she thinks she's been blinded right at the end of the story.LEELA:Slay me, Doctor.DOCTOR What?LEELA:I'm blind. Slay me now. It is the fate of the old and crippled. This response to disability is foreshadowed in the opening episode, where Leela misunderstands a reference to Reuben "killing himself" with work, and asks if he is crippled. It's a shocking idea to put into the mouth of our main identification figure in a family show on at Saturday tea-time. Yes, it helps that the Doctor tells Leela quite clearly that she's wrong - but I'm not sure quite enough.Part of the problem is the strength of the imagery. It's not just Leela's death we conjure in our minds but also that of the old and crippled. I spoke before about how the language used can make Doctor Who more vivid and horrible than anything we're shown on screen. And yet, I think it's important that when Leela says these things she's not dressed as a savage: she's in ordinary jeans and a jumper. It's a brilliant juxtaposition: the words she uses cut against how she appears. She might look like an ordinary young woman but inside she's something wild. It's very rare in the old show to get inside a character's head and see the world as they do - but with Leela we do.It's a shame that, from the next story, Leela takes a retrograde step and puts her animal skins back on. Actress Louise Jameson has said before that it's almost as if those in charge could (unconsciously) only allow such a strong female character if at the same time they took her clothes off. But I'm not sure I agree, because when they take Leela's clothes off her again the writing stops being as strong. With the one exception of The Sun Makers - where Leela gets lines like,You touch me again and I'll fillet you.- for the rest of Season 15 she is written as rather a generic companion, chasing round after the Doctor to ask him what's going on. How much more brilliant and rich and rewarding if she had worn ordinary clothes? The writers would have had to remind us in dialogue and action that she wasn't what she seemed, and that would have meant more compelling stories and better served the character. For all she grew up on another planet, Leela is a human - the last human companion in the series for some time. But when she's written well, with such bloodthirsty imagery, she's the most alien best friend the Doctor ever had.Next episode: 1978
