The Watch

In "The Watch" four guys, each with their own bizarre (somewhat cookie cutter) quirks come together to form their own neighborhood watch group... only to have to face down a threat from another world. But the best way to tell you about "The Watch" is to tell you about the guys who made it.Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and (The less well know, but equally funny) Richard Ayoade form the center of the group. Each bringing their own signature skills to full bear. Stiller, the inhumanly uptight square. Vaughn, the most laid back dad on earth. Hill, the awkward outsider who just wants to fit in, and Ayoade... well, as the least known of the four, his routine isn't as well known, but he rounds out the group as a great fourth man, the observer, who isn't shy about the fact that he's interested in a good time. Expect to see more of him in the future. The plot, as you can imagine, is full of filthy, and hilarious moments. Written in part by Seth Rogen, and  Evan Goldberg, full of the pairs well known disgusting, and just as often funny deadpan moments.Bringing it all together, is director Akiva Schaffer. You might not know his name, but if you have ever listened to "Lazy Sunday," "Dick in a Box," or "I'm on a Boat" then you know his past work. As one third of the guys behind SNL's Digital Shorts, he's been responsible for some of the show's funniest moments in the past 10 years... and the movie "Hot Rod." So, hey, the guy's not a God.  While all the guys above have had a few big misses, in "The Watch," all are on their game. Mind you, they're not on their *BEST.*  I didn't think it was as funny as "Dodgeball," but it was better than a lot of other lackluster comedies. A warning, however, as I mentioned above, the humor is really filthy. I mean, really. In fact, as I often comment about a lot of similar comedies as of late... a lot of the filth seems to exist only because they couldn't think of a better joke. On top of that, there are a lot of real blood curdling, jump out and scare you moments. The R rating may be a bit of a stretch here, but parents may want to keep younger kids away, if only because they're afraid the kids might mirror the actors. "The Watch" Isn't going to set any blockbuster records. It's going to sit in the back for a while, simmer, and grow in popularity until it comes out on DVD and more people catch it. In fact, I don't think you would really lose too much doing the same yourself. But if you need a break from some of the heavy stuff out there, and you feel like some adult fair, then you should be sure and watch, "The Watch."(See what I did there? God, it's like I'm paid to write for a living! )
